Two-Step Equations

Equations: Learn

An equation is a mathematical statement that has two expressions separated by an equal sign. The expression on the left side of the equal sign has the same value as the expression on the right side. Solving an equation means manipulating the expressions and finding the value of any variables.

To keep an equation equal, we must do exactly the same thing to each side of the equation. If we add (or subtract) a quantity from one side, we must add (or subtract) that same quantity from the other side. If we multiply (or divide) a quantity from one side, then we must multiply (or divide) that same quantity from the other side.

If the equation has more than one operation on the side with the variable, we follow the order of operations, but in reverse. (That is, first take care of addition or subtraction, and then take care of multiplication or division).

For example, to solve the equation: 8x-2=14, we must first add 2 to both sides, then divide the 8 from both sides.

8 x - 2 = 14
+ 2 +2
8 x = 16
÷ 8 ÷8
x = 2
