Relationship between Percents and Fractions

Percents to Fractions: Learn

Do the following steps to convert a percent to a fraction:

  • Remove the Percent sign
  • Make a fraction with the percent as the numerator and 100 as the denominator
  • Simplify the fraction if you can

For example: Convert 83% to a fraction.

  • Remove the sign: 83
  • Make a fraction: 83/100
  • 83/100 is already in simplest form

This procedure works because the word percent means "by hundredths" and creating a fraction with 100 as the denominator is equivalent to dividing by 100, which produces hundredths.
