Multiply Mixed Numbers

Multiply Mixed Numbers: Learn

Mixed numbers consist of an integer followed by a fraction. To Multiply Mixed Numbers:

  • Convert each mixed number to an improper fraction.
  • Multiply the two numerators together.
  • Multiply the two denominators together.
  • Convert the result back to a mixed number if it is an improper fraction.
  • Simplify the result.

Example: Multiply 6 2/8 by 3 5/9

6

3
5
9
=
50

50 * 32
8 * 9
=

9

That last step can be tough, simplifying a fraction with big numbers. To keep the numbers small and easy to work with, you can cancel factors before multiplying. It's the same as simplifying a fraction, but you can choose the numerator and denominator of either fraction.

Example: Multiply again, but simplify the problem by canceling a factor of 8 out of the 32 and 8.
